From November 3d until 14th Ed van Hinte gave a workshop at the Escuela de Arquitectura Talca University in Chile, invited by professor Eduardo Aguirre. Talca is the main city in Maule valley, the origin of Chilean wine.

The workshop aimed to investigate the possibilities of composing materials into a three meter high very light structure. The starting point for the 11 participating groups emerged from preliminary investigation into the availability of materials on six types of locations distributed over a cross-section of the country, with Talca in the middle. It matched the pragmatism that is a consequence of lack of money.

The curriculum is unique in that students really learn to build. Graduation virtually always finishes with a real small-scale project. The almost 80 participating students appeared inventive. They used cochayuyo (a kind of kelp) and several kinds of reed, such as mimbre, but also paper maché and waste plastic and they learned to interpret the notion of ‘building’ wider than usual.
