The Building Lightness project entails development, representation
and demonstration of processes for light building. Because of the exploring
character and the aim to create maximum opportunities for real innovation
and lightness on the long term, the following rules apply:
no concrete / no steel / no sheet glass / apply foams, textile,
polymers and composites (‘frozen textile’).
There are additional constraints for expression:
lightness as essence / coherence and balance / layering of meanings
/ playful, seductive / trustworthy / warp.
The latter term implies stylistic diversity is allowed, just like anytime
anywhere.
There are ideas for the result, but they are not compulsory:
Transportation is limited as strongly as possible to light tension loaded
building parts. Everything that can take pressure should be harvested at
the building site: sand, water, waste. Pressure stress is unavoidable, because
of gravity.
For horizontal floors composite parts may be applied, like the ones that
are already being produced to serve as bridge decks. Thus the main construction
will be a load bearing infrastructure for light buildings. Walls and floors
can consist of laminates of foams and composites that can be draped.
Contextual conditions will b considered: the interaction with rules and
regulations, consumer perception, environmental impact, costs. The process
will be described in scenarios. A selection of scenario elements will be
elaborated in models and dummies, some live size, others on scale. They
can of course be buildings or parts thereof, but may include for instance
a shop where you can buy a house or elements, or production facilities,
vehicles, tools and working outfits.
Lightness Studios cooperates with specialised engineers and product and
fashion designers. Cooperation between people from different disciplines
promises to be advantageous. Fashion designers have a feeling for time,
are used to speed and can think in textiles which may be turned into composites.
Product designers have a more pragmatic approach and narrative quality.
Since the project concerns the building process, in a later stage architects
and users can be involved. Moreover scientific expertise will be necessary,
for example in the field of lightness perception. The project generates
ideas for solutions, concrete questions about further development, and of
course inspiration.
